My Day at Windsor--The Castle

I hadn't visited Windsor Castle since my student days, nor had my husband. My reason for going was related to the novel I'm writing. The primary characters, a duke and duchess, were related to the monarchs of their era, serving in their household, and occupied a grand house adjacent to the castle.

This is the large and impressive gate on Castle Hill, which in fact serves as the exit, on completing the tour.

The Queen's Lodging in the Upper Ward
Her Majesty's private apartments are located in this section of the Upper Ward. For obvious reasons, there is no public access. A sentry is on duty. I happen to aim my camera as one of the many aeroplanes was passing over--the castle is located on the Heathrow approach.

St George's Chapel
Buried in St George's Chapel are numerous monarchs. Here is a complete list of royals interred there. This chapel royal was of particular interest to me, because the Duchess about whom I'm writing is buried here, in the Rutland Chapel. Her duke was a Knight of the Garter, and his armorial plate--brass with coloured arms engraved upon it--is affixed to Staff 15 in the choir. After we succeeded in locating it, the steward generously permitted me to pass through the velvet rope and examine it up close.

Not even Her Majesty's corgis and dorgis?
