We took a late stroll through St James's Park and continued to the Palace and St James's Street. This is very familiar territory, and enjoyable in every season and at any time of day.

The lake in the park is full of waterfowl, who live on Duck Island. Charles II was a lover of birds (the kind with feathers as well as the kind he seduced), and in his day there was a canal where he fed his fowls, and a decoy, and an aviary along Birdcage Walk.
One of the best views in London can be seen from the bridge over the lake--Buckingham Palace.

I paused at Lock the Hatter to admire the seasonal window display. My spouse was gazing longingly at the wares next door, at the wine merchants Berry Brothers & Rudd.
A customer of both Lock's and the Berry's, the Regency dandy Beau Brummell, whose statue can be found in Jermyn Street.
We crossed from Jermyn Street to Piccadilly via the Piccadilly Arcade, nicely decorated for Christmas.
