River Cornaa

River Cornaa

In Manx, Cornaa (pronounced Cor-nay) means "millstone glen." In earlier times, various water-driven mills operated along the river, grinding grain and processing flax. On grassy riverbanks like this, lengths of linen cloth were laid out and pegged down for bleaching. The river flows through the wooded glen and joins the sea at Port Cornaa. I took this photograph from the stone bridge near the Boayl Fea house and a remaining mill building, now converted to a residence.

His mind was busy as he wandered through the glen, shaded and cooled by graceful alders, green with ferns and brightened by yellow kingcups. In a few weeks, the patches of bluebells that thrived in this damp, woodland shade would add another color to the display.
