
The first time I visited this rugged headland, the easternmost point on the island, I envisioned an imposing castle near the cliffs overlooking the sea. Research confirmed the existence of early hill forts close to the site for my fictional Castle Cashin, ancestral home of the Earl of Ballacraine. Sheep graze here, as they did in the late 18th century, although the flax grown for linen-making has been replaced by other crops. The block towers and jagged gray stone battlements of the centuries-old castle were impervious to the passage of time or a change of occupant.
