London Churches I enjoy visiting churches. During this stay in London, I had the opportunity to re-visit one, and to experience one entirely new to me. St. James's Church in Clerkenwell has a long history. There was a church here from the 12th century, but the present building is Georgian, circa 1796. St. Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield, is the oldest church building in London. Originally a priory, founded 1123, it is impressively ancient. The tower dates from the early 17th century. The church appeared in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral. The baptismal font at St. Bartholomew's, dating from the 15th century. The artist William Hogarth was christened here.
